70’s Insomnia

I am scared. I am afraid of the emptiness. I don’t want to let go. The ways to escape sleep are limited. My imagination is my best means to keep myself safe from the angst of nothingness. I entertain myself in another world where I am the central character all-powerful and in control.    From birth, I did not want to sleep. I resisted the shift in consciousness and this followed me into childhood. Now vast swathes of hours awake confront me as I lie in bed at 7:30 pm. The dutiful daughter. I can hear the brothers next door playing outside....

I Am Human

I am human, a fallen angel. The musings of my imagination create fantastical scenarios that are so pleasing but never arrive. The delights and pleasures I was expecting seem to elude me. I am sorely disappointed with this lifetime. I am the disappointment of a lifetime. I am a failure in my eyes. I am a failure in God’s. eyes. I never to measure up.   Throw expectations out the window, hopes, and dreams with them like the baby and bathwater. I’m not the apple of my eye. The satisfaction never to be fulfilled is disappointing, but that is what I have to...

The Fear of Pure Freedom

As an adult, I’m supposed to have things figured out, or at least that is the way it feels. I bought into the idea that I am supposed to take the weight of the world on my shoulders even though I still get lost and caught up in the interminable stream of thoughts that float around my brain. I don’t know if I am ever going to feel like an adult.   My youngest daughter just moved out and I still feel like a kid. Instead of having things figured out, I find myself seeking, looking, longing to feel secure. I crave...

Who Are You?

Who are you during this time of reckoning?   Who are you when violence goes unpunished and the necks of the vulnerable are trodden on?   Who are you while the trees burn, animals disappear, ocean’s rise, and hurricanes rage?   Who are you as families are torn apart trying to survive and find a better life?   Who are you when power is held in the hands of a few who are lining their pockets with gold, while others go hungry and without shelter?   Who are you when a leader tells you he will not leave?   Who are you when 200,000 lives are dismissed as an insignificant statistic and...

Lessons Learned From the Elusive Big “O”

This post references sexuality and female orgasms. If you are sensitive to these topics, please give this one a miss.   There are some things in life where it is obvious that willpower is not going to get you there. Having an orgasm is one of them. There was a period of time when I was going through the changes associated with menopause that orgasms became more elusive, and for part of that time nonexistent. This was disconcerting, but I learned to enjoy the valley orgasm of sensual pleasure and focus on slowing down, letting go of the goal of reaching a...

Beyond the Game of Pleasure and Pain

One of the things I have been really enjoying in my work recently whether it be in supervision sessions with coaches, working with clients, or facilitating the Rewilding Experience, is helping people to see the innate wisdom that is unfolding right before their eyes. It reminds me of how Syd Banks said you are enlightened, you just don’t know it. Or of the Sri Ramana Maharishi quote:   Realisation is nothing to be gained afresh; it is already there. All that is necessary is to get rid of the thought ‘I have not realised.   We can be so wedded to our ideas of...

The Journey of Remembering Who You Are

I had an experience during a group meditation several years ago where I felt like I became an infinite beam of diffuse white light extending into space. I felt tremendous love. Even the soft breeze on my skin felt like love. I’m not sure how long the experience lasted. It felt like a long time, but it might have only been minutes.   As I reflect on this experience now, I recognize it was a peak experience and not the consciousness in which I live my daily life, but I wanted to share it because of what it points to. It is...

Inner Peace and Psychology Don’t Mix

I am trained and licensed as a Marriage and Family therapist. I love serving people and supporting them with suffering less and loving more. I entered the field of psychology because it looked like the best way to go about helping people. You can understand then why it would be disconcerting when I came across an understanding that revealed to me that the solution to suffering is not actually found within the scope of the discipline of psychology that studies thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.   The very thing I learned about to help people actually does not have the answers in it.   After...
