Don’t Trust Your Low Mood Thinking

Angus has a chance to show off about how well the English soccer teams are doing in the European soccer championships, but he does have a good point that they have demonstrated tremendous resilience in the face of adversity.

This is so helpful in relationships. It is easy to get discouraged about our partner and our relationship when we are in a low mood. When we take low mood thinking seriously we create plans to cope with what we see. I used to get into a low mood, feel discouraged about our relationship, and then start planning how to leave Angus so I could escape my suffering.

Little did I know the suffering was coming from my own thoughts and not Angus. I would go through all the pain of strategizing and then have my mood lift and see things completely differently. All the inner turmoil was for naught.

Now we are both much better at not taking our low mood thinking seriously. This helps us to be more discouragement proof like the English soccer teams. Even when our negative thinking looks real and like there is something to do, we wait it out. Not buying into your insecure thoughts is so helpful in relationships. It makes it easier to ride out low mood thought storms when you slide down the snake and remember there is always going to be a good mood ladder around the corner.
